Impasse in Airbus Contract Negotiations
Negotiations regarding a contract proposal from Airbus, the giant aircraft manufacturer, are at an impasse as the Montreal-based production crew working on the A220 jet line labels the offer as completely "untenable," claims have been made known through a memorandum issued to members by their union.
Airbus has been engaging in discussions with the projected 1,300 workers in the Quebec region of Canada amidst efforts by the European aircraft maker to rein in expenditures on its unprofitable A220 jet.
Unsatisfactory Terms and Impending Vote
While the specifics of the proposal will not be disclosed until the 10th of March, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has cautioned in the memo that this proposal “is completely impractical and utterly objectionable."
A poll to decide on a contract replacing the one that lapsed in December 2023 is slated for March 17.
Union's Response and Airbus's Statement
"There should be repercussions for this antagonistic offer," declared the union negotiators in the letter, which was written in French. "Our message to the employer needs to underscore our standpoint."
"We think that the contract proposal we put forward to the union is both equitable and logical, which would guarantee the A220's sustainable success," announced Airbus in a statement sent via email on Tuesday.
"We are fully committed to these negotiations," Airbus reinforced.
Potential Consequences of Union Rejection
Should Airbus's offer be declined, union members may promote the use of pressure tactics. However, before downing tools, laborers would initially need approval for a strike mandate.
